Why don’t my outside outlets work?
This is often a problem you can solve without a service call by a professional, you just need to know where to look.
If you house was built in the 1970's or later, it might be a tripped GFCI outlet or breaker. While this has become fairly common knowledge, I find that some homeowners have trouble locating the GFCI to reset it. So, here is where they might be according to the age of your house.
1970’s, your GFCI is probably located in your panel in the form of a breaker.
1980’s, your GFCI will often times be in the powder bathroom on the main level, but it might be in the garage, or one of the other bathrooms.
1990’s or newer, your GFCI is most likely in the basement within 25’ of the furnace, occasionally it is in the garage. You don’t have to worry about the bathrooms anymore, because outside outlets were no longer tied to bathroom receptacles after the 1980’s.
Once you find the gfci, push the rest button and then check to see if your outlets are working . It is always a good idea to understand why it tripped. Sometimes it can be caused by faulty outdoor outlet covers, but there are many other reasons. Give us a call if you need help.
